New 3D renderings of The Harriet reveal a new chapter for Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood. This park-adjacent, purpose-built rental development is more than a building; it is a deliberate response to the challenges and opportunities of inner-city living. Designed by DAAS Architecture, a firm recognized for its disciplined approach to urban infill, The Harriet aims to strengthen Kensington’s identity while respecting the neighbourhood’s scale and openness.

Reinforcing Kensington’s Walkable, Mixed-Use Character

Kensington is known for its walkability and vibrant mix of uses, qualities that The Harriet seeks to enhance rather than disrupt. By replacing fragmented, underutilized parcels with a cohesive full-block development, the project creates a stronger urban edge along Riley Park. This continuity improves the pedestrian experience by offering a consistent streetscape that invites engagement with both the public realm and the park.

The Harriet’s design respects the rhythm of the neighbourhood’s streets and sidewalks. Its massing and setbacks are carefully calibrated to maintain sightlines and preserve the openness that defines the area. This approach avoids overwhelming the pedestrian scale, instead fostering a sense of place that feels both connected and comfortable.

Responding to the Park and Surrounding Context

Full-block, park-adjacent developments are increasingly rare in built-out inner cities, making The Harriet a notable example of thoughtful site assembly. The building’s alignment along Riley Park creates a deliberate boundary that strengthens the park’s urban edge without encroaching on its openness.

DAAS Architecture’s design uses setbacks and varied massing to respond to both the park and the surrounding residential context. The building steps back at key points to allow light and air to reach the street and park, while its height is moderated to fit within the existing scale. This measured density introduces more housing options without compromising the neighbourhood’s character.

Design Restraint for Long-Term Relevance

The Harriet exemplifies design restraint, a quality that ensures the building will age well and remain relevant beyond short-term trends. DAAS Architecture’s focus on disciplined urban infill means the project prioritizes permanence and adaptability over flashy or ephemeral features.

This restraint is evident in the building’s material palette, proportions, and detailing, which emphasize clarity and durability. The design avoids excessive ornamentation or gimmicks, instead creating a timeless presence that complements Kensington’s established character.

Improving Streetscape and Public Realm Engagement

By consolidating multiple parcels into a single, cohesive development, The Harriet enhances streetscape continuity and public realm engagement. The project introduces active frontages and thoughtful landscaping that invite residents and visitors to interact with the street and park.

The pedestrian experience benefits from improved sidewalks, lighting, and seating areas that encourage lingering and social interaction. These elements contribute to a safer, more welcoming environment that supports Kensington’s role as a lively inner-city district.

A Model for Kensington’s Ongoing Evolution

The Harriet stands as an example of how careful design and site assembly can add density, housing, and permanence to a mature neighbourhood without sacrificing its defining qualities. It shows that architecture can quietly transform urban areas by reinforcing identity, improving public spaces, and integrating new development with existing context.

As Kensington continues to evolve, projects like The Harriet demonstrate the value of measured, intentional growth. This approach supports the neighbourhood’s long-term vitality while respecting the openness, scale, and walkability that make it unique.
